Liability insurance covers the costs of injuries and property damage to others if you’re found at fault after an accident.

It doesn’t cover your own injuries and damage, however. For that you would need personal injury protection, medical payments protection or health insurance, if you don’t have a full coverage policy.

Teen drivers tend to pay the highest rate of any age group because of their lack of experience driving.

After a DUI, Texas drivers are required to carry an SR-22 — a document proving you have Texas’ minimum liability insurance — for two years.

Car insurance companies consider drivers with a DUI to be high risk. Some don’t offer SR-22 filings, and may deny coverage or cancel your policy.

If your insurer isn’t cooperative in helping with an SR-22, compare car insurance quotes from other companies and see if you can find a better deal.

Drivers with bad credit usually pay higher rates because many car insurance companies consider them more likely to file claims. Credit-based insurance scoring is still a hot topic issue, and has been restricted or prohibited in a few states.

Texas law requires drivers to carry 30/60/25 car insurance limits. This means you need at least these amounts below for bodily injury and property damage liability car insurance:

Coverage typeMinimum amount needed
Bodily injury liability (per person)$30,000
Bodily injury liability (per accident)$60,000
Personal property liability$25,000

Although these limits meet Texas car insurance requirements, they may not be enough if you cause an accident that results in extensive injuries or damage.

Any claim-related expenses that occur once your policy limit is met will have to be paid by you out-of-pocket. To avoid this, consider raising your liability limits to what your budget can handle.
