How To Do a U.S. Bank Balance Transfer

Compare balance transfer offers currently available from U.S. Bank to find the best one for your needs. Then, apply for the card online. You’ll need to provide personal information, including your name, home address, date of birth, total gross income and more.

You can choose whether you want to request a balance transfer during the application process. When you click the “Yes” box, you’ll be prompted to enter the total amount of the balance you want to transfer.

Later in the application process, you will provide more detailed information for your balance transfer request, including:

1. The amounts you want to transfer from each account
2. The account numbers of the cards you want to transfer balances from
3. The name(s) of the card issuer(s) from which you want to transfer

U.S. Bank allows you to enter up to five accounts you want to transfer balances from to your new card. The minimum transfer amount for each account is $100.

There’s no guarantee that U.S. Bank will approve your request. It’s possible to get approved for a new card but have a balance transfer request denied. The total transfer amount cannot exceed your credit card limit. If approved, U.S. Bank will send payment to each payee you listed on your request. You’ll receive a letter from U.S. Bank confirming your request and the amounts paid to each card issuer.

If you already have a U.S. Bank credit card, you can request a balance transfer online or through the U.S. Bank mobile app.

To make a request online, start by logging in to your online account and then follow these steps:

1. Select “Accounts” from the main menu and then choose your credit card account.
2. Choose “Payments and limit” and then click “Request a balance transfer.”
3. Review the offer details and select the offer to continue the process.
4. Choose a payee from the dropdown menu or enter one.
5. Enter payee information, including the payee’s address, your account number and the amount you’d like to transfer.
6. Click “Add another transfer” if you are transferring multiple balances.
7. Review the information you’ve provided to ensure it’s correct.
8. Read through the balance transfer terms and conditions.
9. Click “Submit” to submit your transfer request.

To request a transfer through the mobile app:

1. Select your credit card account from the dashboard.
2. Click “Account options.”
3. Choose “Manage card” and tap “Transfer a balance.”
4. Choose a payee from the dropdown menu or enter one.
5. Enter payee information, including the payee’s address, your account number and the amount you’d like to transfer.
6. Select “Add another transfer” if you are transferring multiple balances.
7. Review the information you’ve provided to ensure it’s correct.
8. Read through the balance transfer terms and conditions.
9. Tap “Submit” to submit your transfer request.

You can also use the Smart Assistant with U.S. Bank’s mobile app. To use Smart Assistant, tap the blue button on the app’s dashboard and say, “make a balance transfer.” The virtual assistant walks you through the balance transfer process, allowing you to use voice or text to answer questions.

How do you know if your card allows balance transfers?

Not all credit cards offer the ability to transfer balances. The easiest way to determine whether it’s an option is to read your card’s terms and conditions.

Your credit card’s terms and conditions provide information on various details, including promotional offers, APR ranges and card fees. If your card allows balance transfers, the offer would be listed towards the top of the terms and conditions.

The terms and conditions list introductory APR offers, including the offer length, balance transfer fee and the ongoing APR after the offer period ends.

U.S. Bank customers can also request balance transfer checks to pay off eligible existing debt balances. Balance transfer checks are paper checks obtained from your card issuer. Instead of being tied to a checking account like a personal check, balance transfer checks pull from your credit card’s line of credit.

U.S. Bank may issue balance transfer checks upon request. The card issuer may offer them as part of an intro APR promotion, which would still give you access to 0% introductory APR. If there’s no promotion, balance transfer checks are treated as cash advances at the card’s cash advance rate.

 

• Credit cards

  If you have existing credit card balances or cards with higher APR rates, you can transfer the balance to your U.S. Bank card.

• Consolidate debt

  U.S. Bank balance transfers are also a good option if you have multiple credit card or loan payments that you want to consolidate into one account with one monthly bill.

• Loans

  U.S. Bank also allows balance transfers of eligible loan products, including student loans, auto loans, and personal loans.

  You cannot transfer the balance of an existing U.S. bank card or loan balance to another U.S. Bank card.

Balance transfers through U.S. Bank can take up to 14 days to complete. That includes the time it takes to process and approve the transfer request, send payments to designated payees and deposit the transfer total to your credit card’s balance.
