Key takeaway

The free checked bags and other perks offered by the Frontier Airlines World MasterCard® can save the budget carrier’s frequent flyers a bundle, but a general travel card will suit others who want both better rewards and more travel options at their disposal.

Pros and cons

  • Valuable sign-up bonus with easy minimum spend
  • Two free checked bags on Frontier flights
  • Instant Gold Elite status in your first year
  • No first-year annual fee
  • Award fees waived
  • $99 annual fee after the first year
  • Mediocre rewards rate outside of Frontier purchases
  • Miles expire if you don’t use your card regularly
  • 10,000 mile minimum for a flight award

Is the Frontier Airlines World MasterCard® worth it?

If you already fly Frontier regularly, or even just occasionally each year, the Frontier Airlines World MasterCard® is almost certainly worth having in your wallet. Given that Frontier charges for both carry-on and checked baggage, the two free checked bags the card provides on every Frontier flight can easily outweigh the card’s $99 annual fee. The $100 flight voucher is another great perk, effectively giving you a 4% return on the $2,500 in spending required to earn it. You can also use your card to help you earn Frontier elite status.

On the flip side, the card will be a poor fit for those who don’t fly with the carrier much or don’t have any plans to. Frontier miles are also worth less than the competition, at about 1.1 cents each, which places them at the bottom among our estimates for other U.S. airlines. Another downside is that Frontier miles can only be used for Frontier flights, unlike many other airline miles where you have an array of partners to choose from when you go to redeem them. Finally, you won’t get as much out of your ongoing spending with this card compared to a general travel rewards card.

First-year value: $852 versus $738 for the average travel credit card

Ongoing value: $303 versus $591 for the average travel credit card

    Details
Earn 50,000 Travel Miles after spending $500 on purchases and paying the annual fee in full, both within the first 90 days of account opening.

How does it compare to other cards?
The 50,000 travel miles you can earn with the Frontier Airlines World MasterCard® is enough to fly you round-trip to any of their Caribbean or Central American destinations at the Standard award rate. The sign-up bonus is nothing to sneeze at. However, you’ll be restricted to the Frontier Airlines network, which limits how much you can get from your miles. Frontier has a good number of U.S. destinations, but you only have only a handful of international destinations to choose from. If you’re looking for a card that will give you enough miles to fly beyond North America, there are travel cards that earn flexible points, many of which have more valuable offers.

The bonus points earned from the sign-up bonus don’t count toward elite status.

How does it compare to other cards?

The Frontier Airlines World MasterCard® falls short of the competition when it comes to the rewards it earns. It may have great perks for flying with Frontier, but you’ll do far better with a general travel card that earns transferable points. When compared to other airline cards, it’s not all that different. But a card like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card that earns unlimited 2X miles per $1 spent and then lets you transfer those miles to airline programs for even more value will reward you far better in the long run.

  • Redeeming miles

Rating Our rating: 1 out 5 stars

    Details

    • There are no blackout dates on award travel.
    • Miles expire if you don’t use your card or accrue miles by another means every 12 months.
    • You need 10,000 miles minimum to redeem for an award flight.
    • Miles can only be redeemed with Frontier Airlines.
    • Frontier has a limited flight network, with few international destinations and no airline partners.
    • Frontier doesn’t allow overnight connections on award travel, making some awards between cities they serve impossible to book as a single award.
    • There are a few other low-value redemption options, including magazine subscriptions and hotel bookings.
    • Cash back is not a redemption option.

How does it compare to other cards?

Since you’re limited to using your miles to fly within Frontier’s flight network, the number of destinations you have available is far less than with other cards. Frontier flies to around 120 destinations in the U.S., Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. Most other major U.S. airlines, including American, Delta and United, are part of airline alliances where you can use your miles to book a seat on any of the airline’s partners. If you want options when it comes to redeeming miles, you’ll likely be better off with nearly any other airline credit card or a general travel credit card that earns transferable points. Also, Frontier prices its awards in three categories, with Standard awards requiring 10,000 more miles than Value awards. If a Value award on the dates you want isn’t available, you may end up spending far more miles to book your trip.

Note that you usually have to pay a fee of $15 to $75 for award flights booked less than six months in advance, but Frontier waives this fee for its cardholders.

  • Other benefits

Rating Our rating: 2 out of 5 stars

    Details

    • Earn a $100 flight voucher: Spend $2,500 or more during each cardmember year and you’ll be rewarded with a $100 Frontier flight voucher after your account anniversary.
    • Two free checked bags: Pay for your flight using your the Frontier Airlines World MasterCard® and receive two free checked bags on Frontier-operated flights.
    • Instant Gold Elite status in your first year: Enjoy Gold Elite Status for up to 90 days from account opening after your first purchase, and easily extend it for the first year of account membership by spending $3,000 on your card. Gold Elite status provides Zone 1 boarding, a free carry-on bag, and selection of a premium seat at check-in.
    • Earn toward elite status: Every $1 spent on purchases with your card counts as one Elite Status Point towards Frontier elite status.
    • Priority boarding: As a card member, enjoy Zone 2 boarding on each Frontier flight.
    • Award redemption fee waiver: Use your card to pay for the flight taxes and fees when redeeming miles, and the Frontier award redemption fee will be waived.
    • No foreign transaction fees: Using your card outside the U.S. will not incur foreign transaction fees (up to an additional 3% of the purchase price) charged by the bank.

How does it compare to other cards?

If you fly Frontier Airlines regularly, the Frontier Airlines World MasterCard® perks more than justify the card’s $99 annual fee. Given how much Frontier charges for bags, the two free checked bags let the card pay for itself in a single trip. The card also offers other Frontier-specific benefits, such as the ability to earn toward elite status and earn a $100 flight voucher each year. The lack of foreign transaction fees is also a plus. All that being said, the card is missing features such as travel insurance protections and purchase protection offered by other airline cards. But if you fly Frontier, the Frontier Airlines World MasterCard® benefits are well worth it.

See the best credit cards for travel insurance

The instant Gold Elite status alone may be worth it for the free carry-on bags and Zone 1 boarding, but you’ll have to spend $3,000 to extend it. In future years, you’ll need to earn 20,000 status points each calendar year to maintain this status, either through flying or spending $20,000 on your card.
