Florida may offer a great getaway for many, but some residents may pay a premium, particularly for auto insurance. In fact, women in Florida pay an average of $164 more annually than men — the highest discrepancy in the U.S.

We analyzed Quadrant Information Services data to determine which Florida counties, cities and insurers saw the biggest insurance gender gaps. Here’s what we found.

  • Women pay an average of $164 more annually than men for auto insurance in Florida. Nationally, the Sunshine State has the highest disparity in average annual auto insurance costs between men and women by a wide margin. In fact, the difference is $91 more than in the next highest state, across-the-country Washington ($73).
  • By county, Palm Beach County residents see the biggest differences in auto insurance rates between men and women. Women in Palm Beach County pay an average of $337 more annually for auto insurance, ahead of Miami-Dade County ($334) and Hillsborough County ($331).
  • Among the 50 biggest cities in Florida, women and men in Hialeah in Miami-Dade County see the highest disparity in auto insurance costs. Women in the city pay an average of $398 more a year for auto insurance. Boynton Beach in Palm Beach County ($385) and Miami Gardens in Miami-Dade County ($375) follow.
  • Among the biggest insurers in Florida, women covered by Allstate and Security National see the biggest differences in auto insurance rates. Average annual auto insurance premiums in the state from these insurers are $415 higher for women. Progressive ($414) is $1 behind. Meanwhile, women and men insured by State Farm have the same premiums on average.
  • In stark contrast, the oldest and youngest women in Florida pay less for auto insurance than their male counterparts. 20-year-old, 70-year-old and 80-year-old women pay an average of $411, $77 and $278 less for insurance, respectively. For every decade in between, women pay more.

In Florida, women pay $2,949 annually on average for car insurance — $164 more than the average of $2,785 that men pay.

While it’s difficult to know why this discrepancy is largest in Florida, LendingTree auto insurance expert and licensed insurance agent Rob Bhatt says a few factors are likely involved.

“Insurance companies look at a wide range of factors to see how risky different groups of drivers are to insure,” he says. “While insurance company data may indicate women are costing them more, this practice of using gender to determine a driver’s insurance rate is controversial. The practice has been banned in a few states, including California, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.”

Washington is a distant second, with women paying $73 more than men. Delaware rounds out the top three, at a $49 difference.

Looking at the seven biggest insurers in Florida, those covered by Security National and Allstate see the biggest gender discrepancies. At both insurers, women pay an average of $415 more than men — though with average premiums of $4,403 at Security National and $5,676 at Allstate, women pay less overall with the former.

The discrepancy at Progressive ($414) is just $1 behind.

Meanwhile, State Farm has the same average premiums for both men and women. No provider offers lower rates for women compared to men.

Given this, Bhatt says it’s crucial for everyone — especially women — to shop around for insurance. “Each company uses a different system to calculate your rates,” he says. “Evidently, some place more emphasis on your gender than others do. All companies say they have low rates, but you can’t tell which one is cheapest for you until you get quotes.”

In Florida, the oldest and youngest cohorts of women pay less than men, while women in the middle groups pay more than men. This difference is most noticeable among 20-year-olds, with women paying an average of $411 less than men. However, it’s worth noting that insurance rates are the highest for both genders compared to other age groups.

Meanwhile, 70-year-old women pay $77 less than men and 80-year-old women pay $278 less, on average.

Women pay more at every age in between. At 60 years old, insurance rates for women are the lowest on average, though they pay $33 more than men at this age.

Bhatt says this largely boils down to risk. “Research shows that young women have lower crash rates than young men, particularly when it comes to severe accidents,” he says. “This is the main reason young women tend to get lower insurance rates than young men, except in states that prohibit insurance companies from using gender for rates.”

Your car insurance rates tend to level off by the time you reach your 30s, Bhatt says. “That is to say, a 45-year-old with a clean driving record will pay about the same for car insurance as a 35-year-old with a clean record, or maybe just slightly less,” he says. “However, your insurance rates can start to rise again after you reach retirement age. This is based largely on research that shows that seniors have slightly higher crash rates than middle-aged drivers.”

Given the cost discrepancy, it’s crucial to take your time finding cheap auto insurance, particularly if you’re a woman in Florida. We recommend the following advice:

  • Compare quotes from multiple providers. Because insurance rates can vary significantly for providers, don’t settle for the first quote you receive. Use online comparison tools to explore your options. Look for discounts tailored to your situation, like safe driver programs, multipolicy bundles and more.
  • Consider coverage beyond the minimum. While minimum coverage may be cheapest, consider higher liability limits or comprehensive and collision coverage. Uninsured motorist coverage can also offer additional protections.
  • Evaluate your deductible and premiums. A higher deductible can lower your monthly premium, but that means you’ll pay more out of pocket if you end up in an accident. Consider your financial situation and risk tolerance.
