Lemonade brings modern twists to renters insurance coverages. For example, if you live with your significant other, you can share the same Lemonade renters insurance policy. Stodgier companies don’t insure unmarried couples on the same policy.

Lemonade also covers your belongings at their replacement cost. This gives you more protection than a policy that only covers your items at actual cash value, or their value after depreciation.

As far as standard renters insurance coverages go, Lemonade offers all the basics, including:

  • Personal property coverage for your belongings.
  • Additional living expenses (ALE) if a covered disaster forces you to temporarily relocate.
  • Personal liability for injuries or damage you cause to others.
  • Guest medical expenses for injuries to a guest visiting your home.
  • Scheduled personal property, which enhances your coverage for jewelry and other valuables. Lemonade calls this “extra coverage.”

Your personal property coverage protects items in a storage unit, but only up to $1,000.

Lemonade’s personal liability usually covers injuries your dog causes to someone who doesn’t live with you. However there are exceptions for dogs with a bite history and dogs belonging to a so-called dangerous breed.

Lemonade does not offer very many renters insurance discounts. Like most other companies, Lemonade offers a multi-policy discount for bundling your renters insurance with another policy.

Unfortunately, Lemonade does not have very many other types of insurance to bundle with. It only offers car insurance in seven states. It doesn’t offer umbrella insurance at all. Lemonade does have pet health and term life insurance in almost every state where it offers renters insurance.

Lemonade also offers a discount to renters with security devices like a deadbolt lock or smoke detectors. But that’s about it.

It’s too soon to assess whether Lemonade’s car insurance is good or not. The company only offers car insurance in seven states, with plans to expand.

For now, it offers pay-per-mile insurance in Arizona, Oregon and Washington. In these states, your rate is based largely on the number of miles you drive. Your rate can change each month.

Lemonade also offers car insurance in Illinois, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas. In these states, Lemonade uses telematics to set your rate. It uses a smartphone app or plug-in device to track your driving. You get a lower rate if you avoid unsafe behaviors like driving too fast and braking too abruptly.

Lemonade’s car insurance also comes with a dose of environmentalism. The company plants trees to offset your vehicle’s carbon emissions. It also gives you a discount for driving an electric or hybrid vehicle.

Lemonade’s base plans cover 60% to 90% of your pet’s treatments, after you pay an annual deductible.

Lemonade offers home, condo and life insurance along with renters, auto and pet insurance. The company’s home and condo policies can be bought in 20 states each. It sells term life insurance in every state except New York.

Lemonade home and condo insurance

The basic coverages protect your home and possessions from common risks like fire, wind and hail. The add-ons include coverage for sewer and drain backups.

Lemonade life insurance

For term life insurance Term life insurance pays a death benefit to your survivors during your policy period, or term. Term life does not offer cash value. , Lemonade sells policies from Banner Life Insurance. Its policy terms range from 15 to 40 years, with death benefits ranging from $100,000 to $5 million.
