Progressive may be a good option for you if you qualify for some of their diverse discounts. However, Progressive also has relatively expensive rates, and its average customer satisfaction scores are worse than average.

Progressive’s customer satisfaction ratings from a J.D. Power 2023 study were poor in much of the country.

J.D. Power’s ratings are based on survey responses to questions about its billing process, policy information, claims, interactions, policy offerings and cost.

Meanwhile, a National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) report found Progressive received roughly twice the number of complaints compared to the average.

On the other hand, Progressive is currently seen as financially secure, with an A.M. Best rating of A+, so it can be relied on to pay out future claims.

Progressive car insurance policies cost, on average, $2,032 per year for full coverage. That puts Progressive rates close to the nationwide average rate of $1,976.

If you’ve been at fault in an accident, or you have a traffic ticket on your record, Progressive’s rates are often higher than most companies.

However, if you have a driving under the influence (DUI) conviction, Progressive actually offers cheaper rates than average, at $2,547 per year.

Minimum-coverage, also known as liability coverage, covers injuries for other drivers and their passengers if you caused an accident.

Full-coverage policies cover liability coverage, as well as protection for your car if it’s damaged.

Progressive offers great insurance discounts if you bundle your home and car policies, with savings up to $793.

Progressive also offers a few unique discounts. For example, if you’re also a good driver, you can take advantage of the Progressive Snapshot program.

If you’re enrolled in the Snapshot program, your car insurance rate can go up or down based on your driving habits. Driving less and not using your phone while driving can lower your car insurance rate. The average savings for drivers enrolled in this program is $231.

Progressive also offers several other car insurance discounts:

  • Multi-policy
  • Continuous insurance
  • Teen driver
  • Good student (average savings of 10%)
  • Distant student
  • Homeowner
  • Multi-car (average savings of 12%)
  • Online quote (average savings of 7%)
  • Sign online (average savings of 9%)
  • Paperless
  • Pay in full
  • Automatic payment

In addition to standard coverage, like liability and collision, Progressive offers some great optional coverage.

  • Loan/lease payoff: If your leased or loaned car is totaled or stolen, Progressive may cover the cost difference between the amount you owe and the worth of the car, up to 25% of the value of the car before it was stolen or totaled.
  • Rental car reimbursement: If you’re in an accident, Progressive may pay for your rental car, up to your limits.
  • Roadside assistance: With this coverage, Progressive can help you get back on the road or have your car towed if your car stops running.
  • Custom parts and equipment value (CPE) coverage: This coverage will cover custom parts and equipment that you added to the car, up to a limit. This includes stereos and custom wheels.
  • Rideshare coverage: If you drive your car for a ridesharing company such as Uber or Lyft, Progressive can protect you while you’re on the app and waiting for a rider or delivery request.

LendingTree obtains rates from insurance company filings reported to Quadrant Information Services. Rates are based on an analysis of car insurance quotes for sample drivers.

Unless stated otherwise, we used thousands of car insurance quotes from across the U.S. for a 30-year-old man with good credit and no tickets, accidents or DUI convictions, driving a 2015 Honda Civic EX.

For full coverage policies, coverage limits include:

  • Bodily injury liability: $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage liability: $25,000
  • Uninsured motorist: $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident, where required by law
  • Personal injury protection: Minimum limits, where required by law
  • Collision: $500 deductible
  • Comprehensive: $500 deductible

Our team of insurance experts rated insurance companies based on several categories. These categories include average rates, discounts, coverage options, third party customer service ratings, and app / website experience. We weighted these categories based on what customers value in an insurance company.

For 3rd party customer service ratings, we included NAIC’s Complaint Index scores and financial strength ratings from A.M. Best. NAIC Complaint Index scores are used to determine how satisfied customers are with their claims, while financial strength ratings from A.M. Best reflect the ability to pay out claims.
